Night temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir have improved significantly after fresh snowfall was reported in the higher reaches, while parts of central Kashmir witnessed light rainfall on Friday night, officials said on Saturday.
According to the MeT office in Srinagar, “The summer capital recorded a minimum temperature of 3.0 degrees Celsius on Friday night, up from minus 2.5 degrees Celsius recorded the previous night.”
The minimum temperature in the Kashmir Valley has fluctuated over the past couple of weeks following the end of Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day harshest winter period in Kashmir.
Popular tourist destination Gulmarg in Baramulla district emerged as the coldest place in the region with a minimum temperature of minus 6.5 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam recorded minus 0.5 degrees Celsius, up from minus 7.6 degrees Celsius.
A 20-day Chillai-Khurd (“small cold”) began on Saturday after the conclusion of Chillai-Kalan. Chillai-Khurd will be followed by the 10-day Chillai-Bachha (“baby cold”).
Meanwhile, the MeT Department has forecast cloudy but dry weather conditions with no significant rain or snowfall until February 16.
The weather is expected to remain mostly dry over the next two weeks; however, the possibility of rain and snowfall cannot be entirely ruled out, the MeT said. Cloud cover is likely to increase on February 14, with a chance of light snowfall at isolated higher reaches.
From February 15 to 16, the weather conditions are expected to remain partly to generally cloudy without any notable chances of rain or snowfall.
