A team from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) has successfully scaled an unnamed 20,942 ft peak in Arunachal Pradesh and named it after the 6th Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso.
The peak, located in the Gorichen range of the Arunachal Pradesh Himalayas, had never been climbed before.
The 15-day expedition, considered one of the most technically challenging in the region, was led by Col Ranveer Singh Jamwal.
The team faced steep ice walls, dangerous crevasses, and had to navigate a 3-km-long glacier during their ascent. NIMAS, based in Dirang, operates under the Ministry of Defence.
The decision to name the summit "Tsangyang Gyatso Peak" honours the 6th Dalai Lama, born in 1682 in the Mon Tawang region.
“Naming the peak after the 6th Dalai Lama is a tribute to his timeless wisdom and his profound contributions to the Monpa community and beyond,” a defence release stated.
NIMAS has notified the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) about their ascent and the decision to name the peak. Official recognition of the new name is currently underway.
