A final-year student of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Hamirpur allegedly died by suicide in his hostel room, police said on Monday.
The student, identified as Ayansh Sharma, hailed from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, and was pursuing a dual degree programme at the prestigious institute in Himachal Pradesh. He was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room on Sunday evening, officials confirmed.
According to sources, Sharma’s fellow students discovered the incident and immediately alerted the institute's authorities, who then informed the local police.
Superintendent of Police Bhagat Singh Thakur stated that the circumstances leading to the student’s death are under investigation.
"We are looking into all possible aspects of the case. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further details will emerge based on the findings," Thakur said.
The student’s family has been informed, and authorities are working to ascertain the possible reasons behind the tragic incident. Police have not yet recovered any suicide note, and inquiries are underway to determine whether academic stress, personal issues, or any other factors played a role.
The incident has left the campus community in shock, with students and faculty mourning the loss. Further updates will follow as the police investigation continues.
