Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives in a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station and announced financial assistance for the families of the deceased hailing from Bihar.
The stampede, which occurred late Saturday night at the overcrowded station, claimed at least 18 lives and left more than a dozen people injured. Officials in Bihar are still gathering information on the exact number of victims from the state who were either killed or injured in the incident.
"The Chief Minister has expressed his heartfelt condolences over the casualties in the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. He is profoundly saddened by the loss of lives of Bihar natives in the tragedy. As a gesture of support, he has announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh each to the immediate family members of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those who sustained injuries," read an official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).

Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also extended his condolences, stating in a post on X, "The incident at New Delhi Railway Station is heart-wrenching. My deepest sympathies go out to the families who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the departed souls to rest in peace and wish for the speedy recovery of the injured."
Meanwhile, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav strongly criticized the BJP-led central government for its handling of railway operations and demanded the resignation of the Union Railway Minister in the wake of the tragedy.
"The stampede at New Delhi Railway Station is a distressing event. It has once again highlighted the inadequate crowd management and poor arrangements by the central government. The railway minister must take responsibility and step down immediately," Prasad told reporters.
The tragic incident has sparked a political debate over railway safety and crowd control measures, with opposition leaders calling for greater accountability and improved infrastructure to prevent such occurrences in the future.
