The Janata Dal (United) on Tuesday firmly reiterated that Nitish Kumar will be the chief ministerial face of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the upcoming Bihar assembly elections.
This assertion came a day after Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini sparked speculation by crediting BJP leader and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary with the alliance's future electoral success in the state.
Saini, while speaking at an event on Monday, had stated that the BJP’s winning momentum would continue in Bihar under the leadership of Choudhary. His comments quickly drew sharp reactions from opposition parties, who interpreted them as a sign of discord within the NDA and accused the BJP of sidelining its allies.
Responding to the controversy, JD(U) national spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad dismissed Saini's remarks as inconsequential and reaffirmed that there is no ambiguity within the alliance regarding its leadership in Bihar. He made it clear that Nitish Kumar will lead the NDA into the elections and continue as Chief Minister if the alliance returns to power.
Prasad emphasised that the BJP’s top leadership, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, had previously endorsed Kumar’s leadership. He also took aim at the opposition INDIA bloc, predicting its collapse in Bihar just as it has fragmented in other states. According to Prasad, the NDA is not only united but also poised to secure its most decisive victory in the state to date.

Taking a dig at the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Prasad noted that while the party has projected Tejashwi Yadav as its chief ministerial candidate, there is no consensus within the opposition on leadership. He referred to Congress leader Sachin Pilot’s recent statement suggesting that the INDIA bloc will decide on a CM face only after the elections.
Prasad also claimed that Tejashwi Yadav returned without gaining any assurance or commitment after his recent meeting with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi. He said the lack of unity and clarity within the opposition would play to the advantage of the NDA in the forthcoming elections.
With assembly elections expected later this year, JD(U) expressed full confidence in Nitish Kumar’s leadership and predicted a record-breaking win for the NDA in Bihar.
