There was no respite from rain for Uttarakhand on Tuesday as heavy showers lashed many parts of the state. The weather department has warned of intense to very intense spells in Dehradun, Champawat, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar, where it has been raining continuously for days.
Most rivers, including the Ganga and its tributaries Mandakini and Alaknanda, were in spate. Several rivers were flowing above the danger mark. Schools from Class 1 to 12 and anganwadi centres were closed in many districts, including Dehradun.
The Chardham Yatra has also been suspended till September 5 due to the likelihood of continued bad weather.
In the past 24 hours, Nainital district received the heaviest rainfall. Haldwani recorded 116.6 mm, Chorgalia 118 mm and Nainital 114 mm. Mukteshwar received 98.4 mm, Khatima in Udham Singh Nagar 92.5 mm, Betalghat 85 mm, Munsiyari 82.4 mm and Pithoragarh 74.1 mm, the Met department said.
The Gaula river in Haldwani was flowing 20 cm above the danger level. The Ganga was close to the danger mark in Haridwar and Rishikesh. With rain in its catchment, the Gaula barrage level is rising steadily. Officials said 44,124 cusecs of water was flowing downstream of the barrage at present.
At Haridwar, the Ganga was at 293.07 metres and at Rishikesh 339.70 metres, both less than one metre below the danger mark. The Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers in Rudraprayag, the Song river in Dehradun, Banganga in Haridwar and Gauriganga in Pithoragarh were also close to the danger level.
This monsoon has been harsh for Uttarakhand. So far, natural disasters have claimed 79 lives, injured 114 people and left 95 missing.
