The Haryana Prisons Department has denied the claims that ASI Sushil Kumar, a witness in the IPS officer Y Puran Kumar suicide case, was being threatened inside Rohtak Jail. The ASI had been working as part of the IPS officer’s staff.

After Sushil Kumar’s wife, Soni Devi, claimed that he was getting threats inside Sunaria Jail, Rohtak, he was transferred to Ambala Jail on November 4, and a probe was started. Sources said there were eight to nine people in Sushil’s ward. An argument did happen over increasing the TV volume, but he was never threatened, the inquiry found.

A senior jail department official, who has access to the inquiry report, said the allegations were rejected after the probe and after statements of inmates were recorded.

Sushil was detained after an extortion FIR filed on October 6 at Urban Estate Police Station in Rohtak. He was accused of demanding Rs 2.5 lakh per month from a liquor contractor.

On October 7, IPS officer Puran Kumar died by suicide at his Chandigarh home. His wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, complained to Chandigarh Police, saying the FIR was part of a conspiracy to frame her husband by creating false evidence, and she blamed then DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and then Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarnia.

On the basis of Puran Kumar’s suicide note and Amneet P Kumar’s complaint, an FIR was registered against several IAS and IPS officers. On October 10, the Chandigarh DGP set up a six-member SIT to probe the suicide. The SIT had already recorded Sushil’s statement.

Through a letter, Sushil’s wife again claimed that he was being threatened in jail and that his life was at risk. The letter was sent to the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), DGP Prisons, District and Sessions Judge Rohtak, the SIT Chandigarh, and the Rohtak Jail Superintendent.
