Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first phase of the Noida International Airport at Jewar on March 28, marking a major expansion of aviation infrastructure in the National Capital Region.

Developed as one of India’s largest greenfield airport projects, the airport has been built at an estimated cost of ₹11,200 crore under a public–private partnership model. It is expected to function as a key international gateway and complement operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport by easing congestion and enhancing passenger capacity.

The first phase of the airport will have an initial capacity to handle 12 million passengers per annum, with plans to scale up to 70 million passengers upon full development. It features a 3,900-metre runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft, along with advanced navigation systems, including Instrument Landing System (ILS) and modern airfield lighting for all-weather operations.

The project is also designed to strengthen cargo and logistics capabilities in the region. The airport includes an integrated cargo terminal with an initial handling capacity of over 2.5 lakh metric tonnes annually, expandable up to 18 lakh metric tonnes. A dedicated 40-acre Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility is also planned.

Strategically located along the Yamuna Expressway, the airport is being developed as a multi-modal transport hub with connectivity to road, rail, metro and regional transit networks. It is expected to significantly improve access to western Uttar Pradesh and adjoining regions.

The design of the airport incorporates sustainability features, with planners aiming for a net-zero emissions facility. Its architecture draws inspiration from Indian heritage, blending elements of traditional ghats and havelis with modern infrastructure.

Following the inauguration, the Prime Minister is scheduled to inspect the terminal and address a public gathering, where he is expected to outline the airport’s role in driving regional development, employment generation and economic growth.

Authorities have made extensive arrangements for the event, including security deployment and traffic management measures, in view of the large turnout expected.
