Nomination filing begins for first phase of Jharkhand polls

Filing of nomination papers for the first phase of the Jharkhand Assembly election, scheduled for 13 November, began on Friday, according to an election official.

The process, which includes 43 constituencies, will run until 25 October, with nominations accepted daily from 11 am to 3 pm.

Voting in Jharkhand will occur in two phases, with the second round on 20 November. Counting of votes is set for 23 November.

“Nomination process for 43 assembly constituencies going to polls on November 13 began today at 11 am. Candidates can file nominations till 3 pm,” an election commission official confirmed.

Security measures have been implemented, with only five people, including the candidate, allowed to enter the Returning Officer's chamber for the submission of nomination papers.

General candidates must pay a security deposit of Rs 10,000, while SC/ST candidates are required to deposit Rs 5,000. The election expenditure limit is capped at Rs 40 lakh per candidate.

Scrutiny of nominations will take place on 28 October, and candidates can withdraw their nominations by 30 October.

This election will see around 2.60 crore voters, an increase from 2.23 crore in the 2019 assembly election. Among them are 11.84 lakh first-time voters, as well as 1.13 lakh voters with disabilities, third-gender individuals, and senior citizens aged over 85.

The first phase will cover general-category constituencies, including Ranchi, Jamshedpur East, Hazaribagh, and Baharagora, as well as Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Scheduled Caste (SC) constituencies, such as Ghatsila, Simaria, and Khunti.

Candidates with criminal records are required to disclose this information through newspapers and television broadcasts three times during the campaign. Political parties must also publicise the criminal backgrounds of their nominees.
