In a vibrant celebration spanning across the northeastern states, International Yoga Day was observed with fervor on Friday.
Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Nagaland joined the global commemoration, with leaders and officials actively participating in various yoga sessions and events.
Assam marked the occasion with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal engaging in yoga activities held throughout the state. Sarma, expressing his enthusiasm, shared snapshots of the celebrations at Tezpur on social media, emphasising yoga's role in fostering fitness and wellness.
Manipur saw Governor Anusuiya Uikey and Chief Minister N. Biren Singh leading yoga sessions at Raj Bhavan and Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium in Imphal. Uikey highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for integrating yoga into daily life, urging citizens to embrace its benefits for holistic living.
In Arunachal Pradesh, Governor Lt. Gen. K.T. Parnaik (Retd) and Chief Minister Pema Khandu participated in multiple events across the state.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu also participated in the yoga session, highlighting the transformative qualities that regular practice of yoga can bring. Parnaik highlighted yoga's global appeal and its therapeutic benefits amidst challenging times, advocating its incorporation into daily routines for enhanced positivity and productivity.
Sikkim witnessed Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya partaking in a yoga session at Paljor Stadium, praising PM Modi for elevating yoga's stature internationally. Acharya credited India for promoting values of peace and harmony through yoga, resonating with the theme of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam'.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang joined the yoga session and encouraged all to integrate yoga into their daily lives. He described yoga as a valuable gift from India's ancient traditions, offering diverse techniques for natural fitness and rejuvenation.
Nagaland embraced the spirit of yoga with diverse programs organized by state departments, NGOs, and Assam Rifles. Various locations in Kohima hosted yoga sessions, including IG Stadium facilitated by the Department of Youth Resources and Sports in collaboration with the National AYUSH Mission.
Yoga, recognised for its physical and mental health benefits, continues to unite nations in pursuit of a healthier and harmonious world.
The concept of Yoga Day was initially put forth by India's Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, on September 27, 2014, during his address at the UN General Assembly.
This led to a resolution proposing June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.
Recognising its global significance, the United Nations officially designated June 21 as International Day of Yoga through resolution 69/131 on December 11, 2014.
The day aims to promote awareness worldwide about the numerous benefits of practicing yoga.
