The office of the nodal officer for enforcing the model code of conduct (MCC) in Budgam issued a show-cause notice to People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi on Tuesday for allegedly violating the model code of conduct during his campaign rally in the Budgam assembly constituency.
As per the notice, Mehdi is accused of conducting late-night political rallies and campaign activities in different parts of the constituency on November 1 and November 3 without obtaining the required permission from the competent authorities.
The notice, signed by the MCC Nodal Officer, stated that several complaints were received from other candidates regarding these unauthorised political activities. Reports from the Flying Squad Team (FST) Magistrates confirmed that the PDP candidate carried out campaign-related activities during late-night hours without prior approval.
The notice also mentioned that videos of such rallies had been widely circulated on the social media, establishing prima facie evidence of a violation. The nodal officer pointed out that such acts not only disturb the level playing field among the candidates, but also undermine the sanctity of the democratic process.
Mehdi has been directed to submit a written explanation within 24 hours, stating why action should not be initiated against him for violating the model code of conduct. The notice further warns that any future violation of MCC norms by the candidate will invite stringent action under the Election Commission of India’s guidelines and other applicable laws.
