The National People's Party (NPP) is stepping up efforts to expand its presence in Assam, with party chief and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma stating that the move is part of a long-term political strategy in the Northeast.
The party has fielded candidates in three constituencies for the upcoming elections to the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly, marking a measured but strategic entry into the state’s electoral landscape.
Sangma said the NPP has identified select constituencies where it has maintained long-standing engagement with local political leaders. “We have been interacting with leaders in these areas for several years, and this decision is a natural progression of those efforts,” he said.
He emphasised that the party’s foray into Assam should not be judged solely on immediate electoral outcomes. Instead, it reflects a broader vision to gradually establish a stronger organisational base in the state.
“This is part of our long-term commitment to Assam. We are here to build relationships and steadily strengthen our presence,” Sangma noted.
Expressing optimism, the Meghalaya Chief Minister said the party is hopeful of securing its first electoral success in Assam in the upcoming polls.
The NPP, which has a strong political base in Meghalaya, has been working to expand its footprint across other Northeastern states as part of its regional growth strategy, party leaders added.
