Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced a rare two-day holiday for the upcoming Rath Yatra scheduled on July 7 and 8 in Puri, marking a significant occasion not witnessed since 1971.
Chairing a high-level meeting to oversee preparations for Lord Jagannath's annual Rath Yatra, Majhi underscored the festival's auspicious timing coinciding with the tenure of the new BJP government.
"I direct all concerned officers to declare public holidays on these days," Majhi stated, emphasising the festival's importance in upholding Puri and Odisha's cultural pride.
President Droupadi Murmu is expected to grace the Rath Yatra celebrations, arriving in Puri on July 6 to participate in the festivities and chariot pulling on July 7.
Highlighting the convergence of key rituals such as ‘Nabajaubana Darshan’, ‘Netra Utsav’, and the ‘Gundicha Yatra’ on July 7th, Majhi urged stakeholders to collaborate for the seamless execution of rituals and the successful culmination of the festival.
The meeting, attended by Deputy Chief Ministers K V Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, along with ministers and senior officials, marked the final coordination effort for ensuring a smooth Rath Yatra.
