In a move to support the state’s cultural heritage, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced a substantial hike in the monthly pensions for traditional artists during a speech at the 48th State-level Pala Sammilani in Keonjhar this Sunday.
The decision, part of the Mukhyamantri Kalakar Sahayata Yojana, is set to impact 47,704 artists across the state who have dedicated their lives to preserving Odia traditions.
Under the new pay structure, artists between the ages of 40 and 80 will see a jump in their monthly allowance from ₹2,000 to ₹3,000. For senior artists above the age of 80, the assistance has been increased to ₹3,500 from the previous ₹2,500. Chief Minister explained Majhi that this hike is a gesture of recognition for those who have kept the state's language, classical arts, and folk traditions alive, ensuring they have a more stable livelihood, particularly in their later years.
The scheme specifically targets registered folk performers, classical practitioners, and those associated with indigenous art forms. According to the state administration, the funds will continue to be disbursed via direct bank transfers through the Culture Department to ensure transparency. While the announcement was made on December 28, a formal government notification will soon be issued to confirm the exact date when the revised payments will begin reaching the beneficiaries.
