A 23-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped over the last six months after being abducted by a man from her own locality in Odisha's Balasore district, police have reported. The victim filed a complaint on Tuesday, alleging that she was abducted and held in Baripada, in the Mayurbhanj district, where she was repeatedly gang-raped and subjected to physical torture.

The woman has been sent to a rehabilitation centre in Balasore, and a medical examination was conducted on Wednesday.

The woman stated that she recently managed to escape and lodged a formal complaint at the Bhograi police station. According to the station’s inspector-in-charge, Rohit Kumar Bal, the victim’s mother had previously filed a missing person report on March 3, alleging that her daughter had run away with a man and had taken ornaments worth over ₹3 lakh. Based on that complaint, a case had been registered. Efforts are now underway to apprehend the accused.

In a separate, but equally brutal incident, a 17-year-old tribal girl was allegedly gang-raped in the Dumka district of Jharkhand. The victim's boyfriend was also assaulted by four to five men in the Gumra forest in the Kathikund police station area on Monday. The girl, who belongs to a particularly vulnerable tribal group (PVTG), was travelling on a coal-laden truck with the cleaner, with whom she was having an affair. According to Tripurari Kumar, the officer-in-charge of the Kathikund police station, the couple was walking along the road when they were accosted by a group of men who beat up the boyfriend and then raped the girl. The girl has been sent for a post-mortem, and police are currently questioning four individuals in connection with the incident.
