Om Birla arrived in Kolkata to conduct a comprehensive training programme for Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) of West Bengal, focusing on parliamentary procedures and legal frameworks.
The initiative, organised by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, aims to equip legislators—particularly first-time MLAs—with the knowledge and skills required for effective participation in legislative proceedings. The special orientation programme brings together representatives from all political parties in the state.
The sessions will be held across two venues—the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in New Town and the West Bengal Legislative Assembly building.
The inaugural ceremony on Friday witnessed the presence of several prominent leaders, including Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Assembly Speaker Rathindranath Bose, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, and Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Ritabrata Banerjee.
Speakers from legislative assemblies across various states have also joined the programme to train Bengal’s legislators and share best practices in governance and lawmaking.
Following the inauguration, the two-day programme will conclude on Friday with a valedictory address by Governor R. N. Ravi.
The training initiative is expected to play a significant role in strengthening legislative efficiency and deepening understanding of democratic traditions among West Bengal’s newly elected representatives.
