IPS officer Om Parkash Singh has been given the additional charge of Director General of Police (DGP) of Haryana after DGP Shatrujeet Kapur was sent on leave amid allegations linked to the death of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar.

An official order issued by the Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, stated: “The Governor of Haryana is pleased to assign the additional charge of DGP Haryana to Sh. Om Parkash Singh, IPS (HY:1992 RR), Managing Director, Haryana Police Housing Corporation, Panchkula, Director /FSL Madhuban and DG/ HSBNCB (H) during the leave period of Sh. Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor, IPS HY:1990.”

This decision comes as the controversy around IPS Y Puran Kumar’s death continues to grow. The senior officer was found dead at his Chandigarh residence on October 7, in what police believe was a case of suicide.

According to reports, Puran Kumar allegedly shot himself and left behind a note in which he accused eight senior police officers, including DGP Shatrujeet Kapur, of blatant caste-based discrimination, mental harassment, and public humiliation.

In response to the growing tension, the Haryana Government has issued a statewide order calling for strict vigilance and coordinated efforts to maintain law and order and communal harmony.

The circular stresses the urgent need to keep a close watch and ensure peace across all districts, given the public sensitivity surrounding the officer’s death.

Officials have been asked to stay in touch with community leaders and local groups, monitor the situation continuously, and take immediate steps to prevent any disturbance. They must also submit timely reports for review.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday left Delhi to meet the family of IPS Y Puran Kumar in Haryana.
