Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday paid rich tributes to the soldiers killed in the Kulgam encounter.
Abdullah laid floral wreaths and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the two soldiers. “Their unwavering valour and ultimate sacrifice of these soldiers will be eternally remembered with deep respect and gratitude,” he said.
The Chief Minister further affirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of the martyrs’ families, assuring continued support in all circumstances.
“The LG paid tributes to the brave Army personnel Sub Perbhat Gaur and L/Nk Narender Sindhu, who made supreme sacrifice in the ongoing operations against terrorists in Kulgam,” an official spokesman said.
“My thoughts are with the bereaved families. The nation stands shoulder to shoulder with them in this difficult hour,” Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said.
The encounter is ongoing between the terrorists and security forces in the dense forest area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. On Monday, two terrorists, including one believed to be a Pakistani national, and two soldiers were killed in a fierce encounter in Kulgam district of south Kashmir.
This is the second encounter after the district witnessed one of the longest encounters in decades last month. That encounter lasted 12 days before security forces wound up the operation, as the terrorists managed to escape.
In that encounter, two security personnel and two terrorists were killed. Locals recalled the ordeal as a deeply disturbing experience.
While the number of local recruits has gone down in the Kashmir Valley, however, recruitment has increased in the mountainous regions of the Jammu division.
Army officials said the presence of highly trained terrorists taking refuge in dense forests, natural caves, and thick foliage was a disturbing trend, as such challenging terrain makes operations extremely difficult.
