Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has asked the Union government to clear its stance over its intentions and timeline to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, which was promised in Parliament by both the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister.
He said people of the union territory voted for the restoration of statehood, yet it has not been fulfilled despite repeated appeals.
Speaking at the rally in Nowshera area of the Rajouri district, Omar said, “BJP's biggest promise with Jammu and Kashmir people was restoration of statehood.”
He said, “The central government is backtracking from its promises despite the people across J&K voting for the same, and now they are being punished” for the very same reason for which the BJP took credit in the parliament, aka the historic voting numbers in 2024.
He asked, “The central government to issue a statement with a timeline mentioned about when statehood would be granted to Jammu and Kashmir.”
"What is this appropriate time? When will it come? What do we have to do to get to this appropriate time? BJP must tell this," he said.
He also took a swipe at the BJP, saying family members and friends of the National Conference were being targeted via different means; this was the worst part.
"The BJP cannot compete with NC leaders on political grounds and thus have stepped too low and are targeting our families and friends," he said.
On the women's reservation bill that was defeated in the lower house by the opposition parties, Omar accused the union government of eyewashing the people of the country on the bill.
The bill itself was approved in 2023, and the entire opposition had voted in favour, but the BJP brought back the bill to cover up its delimitation bill.
