Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday expressed deep concern over the sinking of an Iranian warship, noting that the vessel and its crew were guests of India for a multilateral naval exercise.
He stated that the United States has escalated the conflict far beyond acceptable limits and that, according to international law and the UN Security Council Charter, US naval forces have committed a grave violation by attacking the ship.
The Iranian frigate Dena was struck by a US submarine in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka on Wednesday while returning from the Milan naval exercises hosted by India.
During a brief interaction with reporters, Abdullah said the incident had caused widespread unease within the Union Territory, as many residents, including students, are currently in Iran.
“It is unfortunate that an attack was carried out on the Iranian warship. They were our guests and had come here for a naval exercise. While returning, it was attacked. In some way, our country is also being dragged into this situation. What will happen in the future is beyond my jurisdiction,” he said.
He confirmed that his government is coordinating with the Central government to ensure the safety and security of Jammu and Kashmir residents as well as students in Iran.
The administration is working to formulate solutions to bring every individual back home safely. He also appealed for calm across the Union Territory amid ongoing anger among Shia Muslims directed at the United States.
“The elements trying to disturb the atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir should not be allowed to take advantage of the situation,” Omar added. When asked about his government’s development vision to address unemployment in the Union Territory, he said the focus remains on promoting entrepreneurship and innovation, particularly in the agriculture sector.
