J&K Chief Minister took exception to inaugural ribbon in tricolor at the Kashmir Haat platform in Srinagar

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday exhibited a gesture that won him appreciation. Faced with an inaugural ribbon in saffron, white and green stripes, Omar Abdullah refused to cut it, and instead untied it and handed it back to the organisers with the instruction that it should be kept with respect.

Abdullah was inaugurating the ‘Know Your Artisans’ event at the Kashmir Haat in Srinagar. In a moment that was captured by camera crews and quickly went viral, the chief minister was seen walking towards the ribbon stretched across and then stopping short as he noticed the colours of the tricolour. He was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, his advisor Nasir Aslam Wani and a host of others.

Meanwhile, after inaugurating ‘Know Your Artisan–Soulful Kashmir’ at Kashmir Haat, the CM reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to preserving the Valley’s rich craft heritage and expanding market opportunities for artisans. “The event placed our talented craftsmen in the spotlight through live demonstrations, product showcases, and meaningful public engagement,” he said.

The event put craftsmen in the spotlight through live demonstrations, product showcases and direct public engagement. Present on the occasion were Surinder Choudhary, Nasir Sogami, Tanvir Sadiq and Salman Ali Sagar.

Pertinently, in August 2025, Abdullah participated in a Tiranga Yatra at Srinagar’s Dal Lake, underscoring the importance of the national flag. "The National Flag is a living symbol of our unity, peace and harmony. The Tiranga carries the hopes and sacrifices of generations and reflects India's true strength–our diversity. I urge everyone to cherish it and uphold its timeless ideals of secularism and brotherhood," he said.

“Earlier, the national flag could only be hoisted at government properties. One person embarked to change this. We should uphold the prestige of the national flag; it is our identity and we should respect it,” he further added.
