Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said that there will be no general increase in electricity tariffs across the Union Territory in the current financial year.
He announced the move following recent apprehensions over an additional 20 per cent charge on electricity consumption during morning and evening peak hours from 6 to 9 in the UT.
In a post on X, the chief minister’s office said, “For 2025-26, there is no general increase in electricity tariffs across J&K and the Time of Day tariff remains unchanged.”
He said that the government continues to prioritise people’s welfare by keeping electricity affordable. Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Development Cooperation Limited had petitioned the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission, seeking to retain or adjust the existing 20 per cent surcharge on consumers during peak hours.
The joint electricity regulatory commission (JERC) for J&K and Ladakh had shelved the proposal for a 20 per cent peak-hour electricity surcharge for the financial year 2025-26, maintaining the existing tariff structure.
The proposal was submitted to address the massive surge in demand during the winter months, but the move, however, faced widespread political and public backlash, with critics arguing that it would penalise low-income consumers during the harsh winters.
