Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Thursday that the people of the Union Territory (UT) were more concerned with governance issue than the changing of names of institutions in the country.

Omar indirectly criticised the LG administration led by Manoj Sinha, saying “What’s in a name? What will this improve from the governance point of view in Jammu and Kashmir?”

He said, “Changing names is fine, there should also more progressive changes in how the government functions as well. People don’t care about this name-change politics; they look at our work. They assess stats, not the names of institutions.”

Reacting to the government’s latest decision to renaming Raj Bhawan as Lok Bhawan, Omar said, “The name change would suggest that there will be more work done for the people now.”

In an indirect swipe at the Central government, Omar said, “How does it matter to people whether I call myself chief minister, mukhyamantri or wazeer-e-ala?”

While responding to the question on the reservation policy in the Union Territory, he said the file had been sent to the Lieutenant Governor for approval on Wednesday.

On the issue of electricity supply during the peak winter in the Kashmir Valley, Omar said the government would ensure that all power schedules are followed properly.

On the Nowgam police station blast and compensation for the next of kin of those deceased, he said, “Those who are eligible will get their due and wherever norms need to be relaxed, it will be done. The cases are being processed on a fast-track basis, and as the formalities are completed, appointment letters will be given to them shortly.”
