Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Thursday that he had spoken to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar about the evolving situation in Iran and the measures being taken regarding the safety of J&K students.

In a post on X, CM Omar said, “Just spoke to EAM @DrSJaishankarji about the evolving situation in Iran. He shared his assessment of the ground situation and the plans that the External Affairs Ministry is working on.”

Omar expressed gratitude to Jaishankar for assuring the safety and security of the Kashmiri students studying in Iran and other people from J&K.

Earlier, parents of Kashmiri students currently studying in Iran had requested the Central government to facilitate the return of their children amid ongoing tensions and nationwide protests in the country.

The parents of those stuck in Iran said on Tuesday, "We appeal to the Prime Minister, the External Affairs Minister, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, and the Lieutenant Governor to evacuate the students from Iran.”

They expressed confidence in the government's past ability to conduct such evacuation missions, as seen previously in Ukraine and other conflict zones.

One of the parents said, "We are grateful for the support the Centre has provided to students in the past. We are sure the government will not let the situation reach a point where the children get harmed and can facilitate their departure quickly.”

In a fresh advisory, the Indian embassy in Tehran urged all Indians, including students, pilgrims, businesspersons, and tourists, to leave Iran by any available means of transport, including commercial flights.  According to estimates, more than 10,000 Indians are currently living in Iran.

The protests in the country, which began on December 28, have spread to all 31 provinces over rising inflation and the continuous decline of the Iranian currency against the US dollar.

While the actual casualty figures remain unconfirmed due to internet shutdown imposed by the Iranian government, reports from both Western and regional sources have claimed that the death toll could range from as low as 700 to as high as 2,500 or more.
