Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has thanked Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for approving the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-I) by one more year till March 2027.
The Chief Minister’s Office expressed gratitude to the Union Minister for granting the much-needed extension, noting that several rural and remote areas in the Union Territory still lack proper road connectivity, which has been hampering development and access to basic services.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister’s Office stated that “The extension will play a crucial role in facilitating the completion of several important rural road projects across the Union Territory.”
The decision is expected to significantly strengthen connectivity in remote and rural areas, ensuring better access to essential services and boosting overall development in Jammu and Kashmir.
The flagship PMGSY scheme aims to provide all-weather road connectivity to unconnected villages across India.
Of the 1.78 lakh habitations with a population of above 500 in the plains and above 250 in hilly areas, 82 per cent had already been connected by December 2017, with work progressing on the remaining habitations.
Originally launched to connect villages with a population of 1,000 and above by 2003, the scheme’s goals were later modified to focus on smaller villages with a population of 500 and above by 2007.
The programme has been highly effective in improving road connectivity in remote regions and facilitating the delivery of essential services through the newly developed infrastructure.
