The Delhi Traffic Police is gearing up to establish special checkpoints at key road intersections to crack down on drunk driving and red-light violations during the Holi festival.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi Traffic) Prashant Gautam revealed that extensive arrangements have been put in place to ensure the safe and peaceful celebration of the festival of colours.
"In the New Delhi range, approximately 400 traffic police personnel have been deployed at 61 traffic points, along with around 40 joint pickets manned jointly with local police. Apart from traffic regulation, our focus will be on curbing drunken driving, triple riding, and violations related to helmets and seat belts," he stated.
In line with the police advisory, stringent monitoring will target road infractions such as speeding, triple riding, and erratic driving patterns.
"Specialised checking units will be stationed at major intersections, drinking spots, and vulnerable locations during Holi celebrations to detect and penalize traffic violations," the advisory highlighted.
Moreover, police cited directives from the Supreme Court committee on road safety, empowering the seizure of driving licenses and their suspension for three months in cases involving drunk driving, red-light jumping, mobile phone usage while driving, and reckless driving.
To ensure road safety, authorities urged the public to refrain from performing stunts on two-wheelers and advised celebrating Holi indoors rather than in public spaces or on roads.
Additionally, the upcoming celebration of Hola Mohalla by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee on Monday may lead to increased traffic flow, according to police.
The festivity, scheduled from early morning until evening at Gurudwara Damdama Sahib near Humayun's Tomb, is expected to draw a significant number of devotees.
Given the event's scope, heavy vehicular traffic is anticipated on routes including Mathura Road, Bharat Scouts and Guides Marg, areas surrounding Neela Gumbad and Oberoi Flyover, under the Lodhi Flyover, and along Zakir Hussain Marg and Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, police warned.
