At least one person was killed, while 230 others were rescued on Monday after a landslide triggered by heavy rain and snowfall struck near the Dangdaro hydropower project site in Kishtwar early on Monday morning.
The landslide buried a project vehicle, trapping two workers. One succumbed to injuries, while the other was pulled out alive and shifted to a local hospital.
In a separate incident, a joint rescue operation by the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and civil administration led to the successful evacuation of 38 vehicles carrying over 235 passengers stranded amid heavy snowfall at Sinthan Top, which connects Kishtwar in the Jammu division.
The Army’s White Knight Corps posted on X, “Medical teams rendered assistance and essential medicines to those in need. The mission witnessed seamless coordination between the Army, J-K Police and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation, reaffirming the Army’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives in the harshest conditions.”
These incidents have once again highlighted the vulnerability of infrastructure projects and travel routes in Kishtwar’s rugged mountainous terrain.
Last year, a cloudburst in the same district led to the killing of 64 people at a community kitchen set up for pilgrims. As many as 31 people were injured and many went missing, some of whom remain untraceable to date.
