Two people were swept away after a sudden rush of water entered a ravine in Ramnagar, officials said. One body has been located, while a search is continuing for the second person.
Executive Magistrate First Class and Tehsildar Ramnagar Satish Kumar said one body was found trapped against a rock and was being brought out. Teams were searching the area for the second person.
Soon after receiving information about the incident, local authorities launched a search and rescue operation. Personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and police were deployed at the site.
Satish Kumar said officials were informed that water had suddenly entered the ravine and swept away two people. He said he immediately reached the spot and alerted the Station House Officer (SHO) and the SDRF team.
“According to the latest information, one body is stuck against a rock and efforts are underway to recover it. The search for the second person has also begun,” he said.
Meanwhile, fresh flash floods triggered by heavy rain have caused extensive damage to farmland and standing crops in Mehra village of Rajouri district in Jammu and Kashmir. Several farming families have suffered heavy losses.
A farmer from Mehra village said the latest flooding had added to the damage caused by the floods on July 19. He said fertile farmland that supported dozens of families had been washed away.
Repeated spells of heavy rain have damaged riverbanks and agricultural fields in the village, affecting local livelihoods. Changes in the river’s course have also washed away large areas of cultivable land, raising concerns about the long-term impact on farming and families dependent on agriculture and livestock.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated heavy rainfall in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, along with thunderstorms and lightning. The weather department has advised people to remain cautious, especially in vulnerable areas, as heavy rain could trigger localised flooding, flash floods and landslides.
Officials have asked people living close to rivers, streams and landslide-prone areas to stay alert and follow safety instructions issued by local authorities.
Authorities are assessing the damage in Rajouri. Affected families are seeking compensation and steps to restore the farmland and livelihoods damaged by the floods.
