A woman was killed, and several others were injured after a stampede broke out during the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of the Navgraha Shaktipeeth Temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Dabra on Tuesday, police said.

The temple, built by former state Home Minister Narottam Mishra, had begun its grand consecration ceremony, which is scheduled to continue until February 20.

The incident occurred on the first day of the event during the Kalash Yatra, when a large crowd gathered, and the situation reportedly turned chaotic, leading to a stampede. Several women fell and were trampled in the rush, leaving multiple people injured.

Dabra Sub-Divisional Police Officer Saurabh Kumar said one woman, identified as Rati Sahu, died in the incident, while eight women were injured. Among the injured, four were reported to be in critical condition, including a four-year-old girl.

Three of the critically injured were referred to Gwalior for treatment. One woman was admitted in an unconscious state to the trauma centre of Jayarogya Hospital in Gwalior, while the four-year-old girl and other injured persons were admitted to a private hospital.

Hospital superintendent Sudhir Saxena said the unconscious woman had not yet regained consciousness and may have suffered serious injuries to her abdomen or chest. “Tests are underway, and the results will clarify the extent of her injuries,” he said.

Meanwhile, the incident has triggered anger among locals in Dabra, with some residents raising questions about alleged police mismanagement during the event.
