A girl was killed and three others were seriously injured as stormy winds wreaked havoc across the Kashmir valley, causing massive damage to houses, mosques, electricity lines, and vehicles.
Officials said a girl, SobyReyaz, a resident of the Daloodi area of the Rajouri district, was killed when a tree fell on her due to strong winds in Behak Gadder, Shopian. Her father, Reyaz Ahmad, sustained injuries in the incident, reports said on Monday.
Reports of damage were reported from the other parts of the valley, including a collapsed mobile tower in Soura.
The minaret of the Jamia Masjid Batapora in Chadoora and the rooftop of another mosque got blown away in Tangmarg by the strong gusty winds on late Sunday evening.
The strong winds caused damage to the electricity line across Kashmir Valley, leaving residents reeling under darkness.
According to the state power development corporation's statement on Monday, 50 per cent of the damaged power infrastructure has been restored in the Valley, while the rest of the systems were functioning smoothly along with surface and air traffic.
An official said there was extensive damage to 33 kV and 11 kV transmission lines. “Electric poles have also suffered huge damage due to the gusty winds.”
He said huge damage was caused in many areas of Kulgam, Pulwama, Srinagar, and parts of north Kashmir. “We are all out on the ground trying to restore electricity in the affected areas,” he said.
