At least one person died and three others were injured when a private vehicle met with an accident at Jhinhini Nala near Thanalla Naka, Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, on Friday.
Officials said that an Alcazar was involved in the crash this morning, killing one person and leaving three others injured. They were quickly rushed to a nearby hospital by locals and police officials.
The deceased has been identified as Rinku Ram, son of Nandu Ram, a resident of Chamba. Those injured in the accident have been identified as Chander Ram, a resident of Bajhrota, Chamba; Kalash Kumar (41), a resident of Pota, Chamba; Jairam Singh, a resident of Bhajrota, Chamba; and Chander Bani, a resident of Bhajrota, Chamba.
Police have taken cognisance of the incident, and further investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways informed that Jammu and Kashmir recorded 831 deaths in road accidents in 2024, while Ladakh saw 61 deaths in the same period.
The region has continuously reported high fatality numbers over the past eight years: 926 deaths in 2017, 984 in 2018, 996 in 2019, 728 in 2020, 774 in 2021, 805 in 2022, and 893 in 2023, before dropping to 831 with a slight decrease from 2023.
Major causes leading to a high number of deaths include speeding on curves, adverse weather, bad roads and poor infrastructure.
