Punjab Police have apprehended one person in connection with the killing of two policemen in Gurdaspur near the Indo-Pak border, an officer stated this on Wednesday.
Apart from the arrest, another man was shot and injured during a police encounter in Gurdaspur on Wednesday morning, the officer added.
Gurdaspur Senior Superintendent of Police Aditya said the arrested accused has been identified as Dilawar Singh, a resident of Alinangal village in Gurdaspur. He said Ranjit Singh suffered a bullet injury during the encounter near the Purana Shala area of the city. Police investigation so far has revealed the involvement of three individuals in the killings.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Gurnam Singh and home guard Ashok Kumar were found dead inside a checkpost on Sunday. They were posted at Adhian, around 2 km from the international border.
The incident came to light when Adhian village sarpanch Kamaljeet Singh went to the checkpost and found the two men dead. He had earlier called the Dorangla SHO to inform him that the policemen were not responding to his calls. The sarpanch reached the checkpost at around 8.15 am and saw both the ASI and the home guard lying dead with gunshot injuries.
Police said the ASI’s body was found on a chair with his hands in his pockets, while the home guard was lying on a cot. The area where the bodies were found is known for heroin smuggling and weapons being dropped by drones from across the border.
Posters allegedly issued by a group calling itself Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan (TTH) were later circulated on social media, claiming responsibility for the killings.
