The budget session of the Haryana Assembly is expected to commence on a stormy note on Friday, with the Opposition preparing to target the BJP government over several issues, including law and order. The session will start with the Governor’s address.
Ahead of presenting the 2026–27 Budget, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who also holds the finance portfolio, held consultations with different groups to gather suggestions. Saini also invited inputs from both ruling and opposition MLAs.
On Tuesday, Saini said the BJP government’s budget would be a 'people’s budget' that would reflect the aspirations and expectations of citizens. Speaking earlier about the state’s economic position, the Chief Minister said according to figures released by the Planning Department on January 29, Haryana’s GDP for 2025–26 (advance estimates) stood at Rs 13,67,769 crore, compared to Rs 12,13,951 crore in 2024–25. He said this reflected a growth rate of 12.67 per cent.
Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda has alleged that law and order in the state has totally collapsed. "Today, extortion is affecting everyone in the state, from businessmen to doctors. Industries are leaving and investment is declining. Improving law and order and instilling public confidence are essential for progress. However, under the BJP rule, the law and order situation has deteriorated and there is an atmosphere of fear among the people," he said. Hooda also described the recent Indo-US trade deal as 'anti-farmer'.
Earlier, Saini said the opposition had no real issues to raise and accused it of running a 'shop of lies'. He also said the Opposition was trying to mislead people over the Indo-US trade deal and claimed that traders, industrialists and the people of the state were satisfied with the agreement.
The Congress has also alleged that candidates from outside Haryana were getting a disproportionate share of government jobs in the state and said it would raise the issue in the House. The Opposition further claimed that the Haryana Public Service Commission had failed to fill all the advertised posts.
The Indian National Lok Dal has submitted 11 Calling Attention notices on several public interest issues. These include alleged inaction on a Supreme Court order regarding construction of the SYL canal, a 'deteriorating' law and order situation, thousands of vacant teaching posts in government schools, rising drug abuse, and a severe shortage of academic and non-teaching staff in universities.
