Opposition parties in Punjab have strongly criticised the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government over the growing threat of gangster-related violence in the state.
Reacting to the gruesome murder of prominent Abohar-based businessman Sanjay Verma, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said the deteriorating law and order situation has created a sense of fear, especially among traders and common citizens. He blamed the government’s failure to act firmly, saying it has emboldened criminals who continue to commit serious crimes without fear of consequences.
Warring also raised alarm over the recent surge in targeted killings allegedly carried out by gangsters for ransom, warning that this escalating violence could further damage Punjab’s already struggling economy.
Echoing similar concerns, senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition, Partap Singh Bajwa, said, “The law and order situation in Punjab has plummeted to an all-time low under Bhagwant Mann’s home ministry and it is imperative that he takes responsibility for this crisis and resigns from his position as home minister.”
Bajwa pointed out that a series of high-profile murders have taken place since AAP came to power, including the killings of singer Sidhu Moosewala and Kabbadi player Sandeep Singh Nangal Ambian. He added that several political leaders and businessmen have also been targeted, and what’s most concerning is that justice remains elusive in these cases
Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar also strongly criticised the state government for its failure to control the rising crime rate, during the ‘Arthi Phoonk’ protest held at Bhagat Singh Chowk. The demonstration, which lasted nearly 90 minutes despite sweltering heat, drew hundreds of residents demanding improved law and order.
Referring to the recent daylight murder of Verma, Jakhar said that traders in Punjab might now think about paying ransom to gangsters than depending on the government for protection. He expressed deep concern for the safety of the business community.
Jakhar slammed the government for making false promises, saying that people are losing trust and now wish for a crime-free atmosphere like in Uttar Pradesh.
Jakhar added, “Today it was not only Sanjay Verma’s pyre, but also the pyre of law and order that was consigned to flames.” The broad daylight murder has sent shockwaves through the local business community.
He accused the AAP-led government of breaking promises made to the people, especially regarding the elimination of drugs and crime. Instead, he said, gangsters continue to thrive, and youth under their influence roam freely with weapons.
Highlighting four recent shootings, Jakhar said these incidents reflect a dangerous rise in gangster-related violence. He urged young people to choose a path of dignity and purpose, not one of crime and destruction.
Jakhar also criticised the Punjab government for following ineffective governance models. “Rather than imitating Delhi’s failed strategies, the state must act boldly and firmly to dismantle gangster culture and restore people’s faith in the system,” he said.
The opposition leaders urged the state government to take urgent and concrete steps to restore public confidence and ensure the safety of its people.
