Kuki civil society organisations in Manipur, including the Kuki Inpi Jiribam, Tamenglong & Noney (KIJTN), have strongly censured recent actions by security forces in Mongbung village, Jiribam district.
They accuse central forces and local police of using "uncivilised and inhumane" methods during a search operation that allegedly resulted in the destruction of essential food supplies like rice, potatoes, and lentils.
The operation, conducted amidst an existing blockade imposed by Meitei groups, exacerbated hardships in the region, according to the Kuki groups.
They point out that this action followed a recent attack by heavily armed Meitei militants on Mongbung and a neighboring village.
Previous incidents of alleged harassment of women and detention of youths during similar operations in Phaitol village have fueled suspicion within the Kuki community about collaboration between security forces and Meitei groups.
In a joint statement, the Kuki Chief Association, Tousem Block (KCA), Kuki Students’ Organization Jiri & Tamenglong, and Kuki Inpi Women Wing demanded accountability for those responsible for the Mongbung incident.
They specifically called for the removal of a Colonel involved in the operation and warned of attributing any adverse outcomes to district authorities, security agencies, and the state government.
