Cyclonic storm ‘Dana,’ which has formed over the east-central Bay of Bengal, is poised to bring very heavy rainfall across several southern Bengal districts, including Kolkata.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the storm is intensifying and expected to make landfall in Odisha by early Friday, bringing wind speeds of up to 120 kmph.
Authorities have already begun taking precautions. Eastern and South Eastern Railways announced the cancellation of more than 150 trains scheduled for October 24 and 25, while the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been placed on high alert.
Cyclone intensifying
According to the IMD, the cyclone was positioned 520 km southeast of Paradip and 600 km south-southeast of Sagar Island as of 8:30 am on Wednesday.
The storm is projected to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm as it moves toward the northwest Bay of Bengal. It is likely to make landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra port in Odisha, with high winds expected.
A Met official said, “The storm may bring wind speeds of 120 kmph. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea from October 23 to 25.”
By October 24 night, wind speeds along the Odisha-West Bengal coast are expected to increase significantly.
Rainfall warnings issued
South Bengal districts, including Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Howrah, and Hooghly, are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated areas receiving extremely heavy downpours on October 24 and 25.
“People should be prepared for intense rainfall and strong winds,” the official added, urging residents to remain cautious.
Train cancellations
In response to the cyclone, more than 150 trains have been cancelled.
An official from South Eastern Railway (SER) confirmed that cancellations are in effect for trains scheduled between October 23 and 25, with additional trains potentially being cancelled as the situation develops.
Eastern Railway (ER) also announced that no EMU local trains will operate from Sealdah station between 8 pm on October 24 and 10 am on October 25.
Services from Hasnabad and Namkhana, close to the coast, will cease at 7 pm on October 24.
“We are taking all necessary precautions to ensure passenger safety,” an ER official said.
Coast Guard on alert
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) confirmed that it had mobilised vessels and aircraft to respond swiftly to any contingencies over the Bay of Bengal. “We are on high alert and have positioned resources strategically,” said an ICG spokesperson.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 13 teams across south Bengal in preparation for potential emergencies. “Our teams are ready to assist wherever needed,” an NDRF official said.
Power disruptions expected
West Bengal Power Minister Aroop Biswas held meetings with district power officials to coordinate efforts to mitigate disruptions caused by the storm. The power department has set up round-the-clock assistance services, and helplines have been established for the public.
“We are fully prepared to handle any power outages,” said Biswas, adding that the power utility CESC, which services Kolkata and nearby areas, is also on standby to respond swiftly to any incidents.
Residents have been advised to take precautions and stay updated on weather forecasts as Cyclone Dana approaches.
