The figures paint a concerning picture across northern India. Uttar Pradesh tops the list with 2.10 crore uninsured vehicles, followed by Punjab (56.54 lakh), Haryana (46.1 lakh), Delhi (30.95 lakh), and Chandigarh (2.19 lakh).

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari informed the House that more than 56.54 lakh vehicles in Punjab alone are operating without insurance.

Nationwide, over 14.31 crore vehicles are running without valid insurance, with two-wheelers accounting for the majority of such cases.

Driving without insurance is a serious offence under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Violators face fines for both first-time and repeat offences.

Additionally, drivers of uninsured vehicles can be held liable for third-party damages, injuries, and legal costs, and the vehicle may be seized.

Minister Nitin Gadkari stated that the government is adopting a multi-pronged strategy based on the 4Es: Education, Engineering, Enforcement, and Emergency Care.

Traffic violations remain a major challenge in India, with unregulated vehicles, unfit drivers, and underage motorists creating significant difficulties for traffic authorities nationwide.
