Over 45,000 vehicles entered Dehradun over the past two days as a large number of tourists headed towards Mussoorie, Chakrata, and Rishikesh, officials said on Monday.
According to police data, 13,500 buses and tempo travellers, 26,000 cars, and 5,700 motorcycles passed through the district during Saturday and Sunday. A large number of these vehicles moved towards Mussoorie. The hill station recorded 2,870 cars, 59 buses and tempo travellers, and 1,700 two-wheelers during the weekend, officials said.
Officials said the heavy traffic on the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway and Premnagar Highway forced local authorities to divide major routes into four super zones, 10 zones, and 19 sectors. Officers of circle rank supervised each super zone, while inspectors and local outpost in-charges managed the zones and sectors.
Senior police officials devised a multi-tier traffic diversion plan with three routing strategies. These included a separate entry and exit system for vehicles and the use of the Kimadi route for Mussoorie-bound traffic to prevent congestion.
Twelve mobile teams were deployed to patrol the routes. Personnel from local police stations, the traffic department, and the prosecution office also assisted on the ground.
The police provided live online updates of traffic diversions on Google Maps for commuters. Cranes were used to remove vehicles from no-parking zones, and physical barriers and cones were placed at key points.
Senior traffic police officers checked deployment points three to four times a day. They monitored vehicle movement and guided tourists to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
