Six farmers were injured on Tuesday after a clash with police over land acquisition for the Delhi-Jammu-Katra Expressway.
A team from the Batala district administration, led by SDM Vikramjit Singh Panthey, arrived early in the morning at Nangal Chor village near Sri-Hargobindpur to take possession of the land.
Officials from the administration and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) claimed that farmers had already been compensated, but farm unions denied this.
Around 50 farmers gathered at the site and refused to let officials take control of the land. When police and administration officials asked them to step aside, the farmers insisted that they would only allow it if they were given fair compensation first. This led to a confrontation, and police used batons to disperse the crowd.
Six farmers were injured in the clash and taken to Harchowal Civil Hospital for treatment. SSP Suhail Qasim Mir stated that the injuries were minor.
A farm leader said that in previous meetings, officials had assured them they would receive proper compensation before their land was acquired. However, he claimed that the administration failed to keep its promise. He added that the farmers would now consult their senior leaders before deciding on their next move.
