As many as 52 students at a state-run welfare hostel for boys in the Jogulamba Gadwal district of Telangana were admitted to hospital after suffering from vomiting and stomach ache following their dinner on Friday night, according to officials.
The pupils, from the hostel in Dharmavaram, Itikyala mandal, were taken to a government hospital. Doctors confirmed on Saturday that after treatment, the students were clinically stable. A district health official reported that 32 students have since been discharged, and the remaining boys are safe and being kept under observation. A medical camp has also been established at the hostel site.
The affected students reported that their dinner on Friday night consisted of sambar, rice, and cabbage curry before they began experiencing symptoms.
In response to the incident, the Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC), led by former High Court Justice Shameem Akther, took cognisance of media reports. The Commission has directed the state's Chief Secretary to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter and submit a comprehensive report by November 24.
