The Sikkim administration successfully evacuated 1,225 tourists from landslide-hit areas including Lachung and nearby regions of Mangan district.
Last week's series of landslides and heavy rainfall claimed six lives, prompting the urgent evacuation.
The remaining tourists, numbering a few hundred, will be airlifted on Wednesday, contingent upon weather conditions. Six helicopters are on standby at Bagdogra airport, West Bengal, awaiting clearance for evacuation, informed Additional District Magistrate Vishnu Lama.
Previously, 64 tourists were rescued and safely transported to Mangan town on Monday.
Mangan district, famed for tourist attractions like Gurudongmar Lake and Yunthang Valley, faced significant challenges due to the calamity.
Under the supervision of District Magistrate Hem Kumar Chettri, the rescue operation continues with support from various agencies including BRO, NDRF, SDRF, and local volunteers.
Expressing gratitude, rescued tourists praised the state government, Mangan administration, and locals for ensuring their safety during the crisis.
The administration remains vigilant and prepared to address the needs of the remaining tourists and tackle any emerging challenges.
Last year, the district witnessed a devastating flash flood that claimed nearly 50 lives.
