A Border Security Force (BSF) trooper was injured in an unprovoked ceasefire violation by Pakistani forces along the border in Jammu's Akhnoor sector in the early hours of Wednesday, officials reported.
The incident occurred around 2:35 am when Pakistani troops opened fire on Indian posts without provocation, breaching the ceasefire agreement between the two countries. The BSF responded promptly to the firing, although details of any casualties on the Pakistani side remain unknown.
“One BSF personnel sustained injuries in Pakistani firing,” a BSF spokesperson said. “The troops are on high alert and maintaining a strict vigil along the International Border and Line of Control.”
The ceasefire violation marks a rare occurrence since India and Pakistan renewed their ceasefire agreement on 25 February 2021. Violations along the border have been infrequent over the past three years.
However, last year saw the tragic loss of a BSF jawan in firing by Pakistan Rangers in the Ramgarh sector, the first such incident since the renewal of the agreement.
The latest breach of peace comes just days before the first phase of the three-phase assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, scheduled to begin on 18 September. The second and third phases are set for 25 September and 1 October, respectively.
Tensions along the border have been heightened, with Indian forces maintaining strict vigilance and preparedness to respond to any escalation.
