The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) on Saturday warned that water will be released from the Pandoh Dam, located about 20 km upstream of Mandi town.
As the water level in the dam has risen due to increased inflow, around 2,000 cusecs of water will be released into the Beas River. This will raise the river's flow to more than 6,000 cusecs, according to an official statement.
The authorities have urged people living near the Beas to stay away from the river. They have also advised residents not to enter the water or take part in any river-related activities from Saturday onwards.
The Pandoh Dam was built as part of the 990 MW Beas-Sutlej Link Project to divert the river's water. During the monsoon and summer, when the water level rises, the excess water is released back into the Beas.
In the past, such releases have led to flooding in parts of Mandi, Hamirpur and Kangra districts. The sudden rise in the river has caused damage to property and claimed several lives over the years.
