The Paragliding World Cup took off on Saturday at Bir-Billing, Kangra, with 94 pilots from 26 countries participating. Eight female pilots are also competing in the World Cup.
In total, 32 individuals are representing India in the competition.
Chairman of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation and Vice Chairman of the Tourism Development Board, G S Bali launched the right day event with a flag-off ceremony at Billing.
Chief Parliamentary Secretary for Animal Husbandry, Panchayati Raj, and Rural Development, Kishori Lal, was the special guest.
Bali said Bir-Billing, was now a world-class paragliding destination admired globally for its unique and lengthy flight site.
He said with vast potential for adventure tourism, the state government was committed to supporting event organizers, thereby strengthening the local economy and providing invaluable exposure for local pilots to learn from international paraglider champions.
Bali further underscored that Himachal’s pristine beauty and spiritual heritage made Bir-Billing a blessed destination, attracting visitors to experience its natural wonders and rich culture. He said efforts were underway to develop amenities in such scenic regions and to explore untouched tourist sites across the state.
Bali announced a grant of ₹60 lakh for the Bir landing site, ₹7 lakh for additional facilities, and pledged ₹35 lakh for the event’s success, along with a lift installation at Kheer Ganga Ghat parking.
