The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued notices to the Punjab Government and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) over an alleged fake police encounter case in Patiala, involving the death of 24-year-old Jaspreet Singh.
The court’s directive came in response to a petition filed by Jaspreet’s mother, Baljit Kaur, who has demanded a CBI probe, alleging that her son was falsely implicated and extrajudicially killed by Punjab Police officials. Jaspreet was shot dead on March 13, shortly after he was named as an accused in the abduction of a seven-year-old boy, Bhavkeerat Singh.
According to the post-mortem report, Jaspreet sustained seven bullet injuries, including three at point-blank range — one of them to the forehead — raising serious questions about the nature of the police operation.
The petitioner has further alleged that the police officials involved in the shooting — CIA In-Charge Inspector Savinder Singh, Special Cell Inspector Harjinder Singh, and Inspector Harry Boparai — were also named in a separate case involving the alleged assault of an Army officer, Colonel Pushpinder Singh Bath, on the same day.
Colonel Bath's case has already been referred by the High Court to the Chandigarh Police for an independent investigation. The overlap of personnel and the timing of both incidents have intensified public concern and prompted demands for an impartial inquiry.
The High Court has now sought responses from both the Punjab Government and the CBI. The matter is expected to come up for further hearing in the coming days.
Baljit Kaur has maintained that only a central agency such as the CBI can ensure a fair and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her son's death.
