Patna launches 24x7 AC lounges for delivery riders, offering rest, water and charging facilities for a nominal fee amid the summer heat.

In a city where the summer sun can feel unforgiving and the streets never quite pause, a quiet but meaningful change is unfolding for gig workers. Delivery riders — often seen weaving through traffic in punishing heat — are now finding pockets of relief in newly launched 24x7 air-conditioned lounges in Patna.

Inspected by Bihar’s Urban Development and Housing Minister Nitish Mishra, these facilities at Gandhi Maidan Gate No. 4 and Income Tax Golambar represent a small yet significant intervention in the everyday lives of delivery partners. Developed under an initiative by the state government and Patna Smart City Limited, the lounges are equipped with air conditioning, purified drinking water, seating, and mobile charging stations — basic comforts that have long eluded workers constantly on the move.

For thousands of gig workers associated with platforms such as Swiggy, Zomato, and Rapido, the lounges are more than just rest stops—they are a reprieve. “Working continuously on the streets during peak summer is exhausting,” said Amit Kumar, a Rapido rider. “For just Rs 2, we can sit in a cool space, drink cold water, and recharge our phones. It makes a huge difference.” His sentiment echoes a broader reality—in the gig economy, a charged phone is as essential as fuel in the tank.

Each lounge, currently limited to accommodating around 15 workers at a time, has already begun reshaping daily routines. Riders who once idled under shop awnings or roadside trees between orders now have a designated space to pause, regroup, and even eat meals brought from home. “Earlier, waiting meant standing in the heat,” said Ritesh, a Swiggy delivery partner.

“Now, I can rest here. It changes the entire workday.”

The introduction of a nominal usage fee—Rs 2 per half-hour and Rs 4 per hour—has also drawn attention. Minister Mishra clarified that the pricing is intended to ensure sustainability and maintain service quality over time. “We want these centres to be self-sustaining while continuing to meet workers’ needs,” he said, adding that the model will be reviewed over the coming months.

Beyond immediate relief, the initiative signals a broader recognition of gig workers’ role in the urban ecosystem. As cities increasingly rely on app-based delivery networks for food, medicines, and daily essentials, the need to support this workforce is becoming harder to ignore. Officials have already acknowledged demands for additional facilities, including nearby toilets, and have issued directions for their implementation.

With Patna becoming one of the first cities in the country to introduce such dedicated spaces, the pilot project is being closely monitored. If successful, similar lounges could soon appear in other busy localities such as Raja Bazar, Kankarbagh, and Boring Road—and eventually expand to other cities across Bihar.
