Pension payments for more than 1,000 people in Uttarakhand have been suspended after they were found to be wrongly drawing benefits under multiple pension schemes, officials said.
The irregularity came to light during a recent analysis of government pension records carried out by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), they added.
Officials said many of these beneficiaries are retired employees from various government departments who were already receiving departmental pensions.
However, they were also found to be availing benefits under social welfare schemes such as old-age pension, freedom fighter pension and statehood activist pension, despite being ineligible.
On Friday, officials said a list of such ineligible beneficiaries has been shared with all district administrations, asking them to carry out detailed probe into the matter.
They said that once the probe is completed, strict action will be taken against those involved, including the recovery of wrongly disbursed funds.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said strict action would be taken against any department or officer found guilty of negligence or corruption. He added that his government remains committed to transparency and clean governance, in line with the spirit of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand.
