PDP leader Iltija Mufti met with the family of a youth who recently took his own life after allegedly being tortured by police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district. This meeting took place after Iltija claimed that she and her mother, Mehbooba Mufti, had been placed under house arrest.
The young man, Makhan Din (25), a Gujjar from Billawar in Kathua, ended his life on Tuesday by ingesting insecticide at his home. In a video, he denied any links to terrorists and claimed his innocence. Following his death, both the police and local authorities launched separate investigations.
Mehbooba Mufti, the PDP president and former chief minister, expressed her sadness on social media, writing, “Iltija finally managed to reach Billawar to meet the grieving family of Makhan Din, who was driven to suicide by police torture. It’s heartbreaking that she had to face so many hurdles and travel like a fugitive just to offer comfort to the victim’s family.”
Mehbooba also criticised the ruling party, saying they were avoiding responsibility and blaming the Lieutenant Governor for the situation. She emphasised that, as a responsible opposition party, the PDP would continue to support the people and offer comfort.

On Saturday, Iltija shared on social media that she and her mother had been placed under house arrest in Srinagar. She had planned to visit Kathua to meet Makhan Din's family but was not allowed to leave.
She said, “Nothing has changed in Kashmir after the elections. Even comforting the families of victims is being criminalized.” Iltija added that their gates had been locked as her mother was supposed to visit Sopore, where Waseem Mir, a truck driver, was recently killed by the army.
