Police have booked the live-in partner of a 54-year-old government employee for murder after he was found dead in their rented accommodation in Manali on Wednesday. The deceased, identified as Ranjit Singh, was a resident of Lahaul and Spiti and worked as a peon in a government school. Police said he had been living with his live-in partner Namarta in a rented house in Patlikuhal village for the past five years.

The incident came to light when Namarta informed the police on Tuesday. She told them that she had an argument with Ranjit on Monday night and found him unresponsive the next morning.

After receiving the information, police teams and family members of the deceased reached the spot to assess the situation. Ranjit’s wife, Tali Palmo, said there were injury marks on his neck, chest and stomach. She alleged that he had been murdered.

Family members said Ranjit had arrived in Patlikuhal on March 7. They added that he was intoxicated when he last spoke to his wife over the phone on Monday night.

Manali Deputy Superintendent of Police K D Sharma said on Wednesday that a murder case has been registered under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He said Namarta has been taken into custody.

A forensic team has been called to examine the scene. The body has been taken into custody and the post-mortem examination will be conducted soon, Sharma added.
