Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Thursday acknowledged that resolving the ongoing crisis in the state would take time due to its fragile and chronic nature, despite concerted efforts by the Centre and state governments.
Speaking during the Nupi Lan commemoration programme, Singh stated, “The state and central governments have been putting all efforts to bring a permanent solution. However, bringing a solution would take time as the situation had become chronic and fragile.”
Referring to the recent re-imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in six police station areas, the Chief Minister noted that the state government had requested the Centre to review the situation and withdraw the Act. He called for public cooperation in the government’s initiatives to restore peace and tranquillity.
The Nupi Lal Numit observance, held annually, honours the role of Manipuri women in historic revolts against British colonialism in 1904 and 1939.
Reflecting on the bravery of the state’s women, Singh remarked, “Apart from the contribution of women during the two historical events, we should also remember the bravery and courage shown by Manipuri women in other instances, including ousting the Burmese during the Seven Year Devastation period (1819-1826).”
The Chief Minister highlighted the enduring courage of Manipuri women, who, he said, continued to lead from the forefront on issues affecting the safety and welfare of the state’s people.
“Manipuri women have contributed in multiple sectors, including social, economic, art and culture, hospitality, and games and sports, among others, apart from their household activities,” Singh noted.
He praised their efforts in showcasing the state’s unique culture globally, adding that the government had introduced welfare schemes such as the Ima Nongthangleima Yaipha Tengbang Scheme, which provides financial assistance to unemployed women above the age of 40 years.
The Chief Minister also lauded the central government’s Women’s Reservation Bill 2023 and mentioned state initiatives like the Chief Minister’s Scholarship for Civil Service Coaching and coaching schemes for entrance exams, including NEET and JEE.
Responding to queries about the treatment of Myanmar refugees, Singh dismissed criticism as unfounded, urging critics to witness the situation firsthand.
“Refugees are being treated under the guidelines of the United Nations and the supervision of the government of India and the government of Manipur. Equal treatment is being given,” he said.
During the event, Singh, along with legislators, paid floral tributes to the Nupi Lan Memorial Complex in Imphal. Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Th.
Biswajit Singh highlighted the courage and sacrifice of the women freedom fighters, terming the day a proud occasion for every Manipuri.
